The Green River Lake R/C Club has humble beginnings that started as far back as the late 70’s and has gone through three charter evolutions.

The first chartered club in the Campbellsville area was known as the “Green River Pattern People”. The group consisted of Dan Beam, Eddie Mattingly, Carol Reeser, Lanny Atherton, Vaughan Sharp & Roger Stiles.  The group consisted of guys, who had a passion and desire to learn and fly radio control airplanes, sharpen their flying skills and compete in pattern contests flying precision aerobatics.

They held a few contests at Taylor County Airport and the Washington-Marion County airport. The group also assisted with the 1983 Team Selections for the World Pattern championship at Rough River State Park. They met the top fliers from all over the USA, including two past presidents of the AMA, Mr. Dave Brown and Mr. Don Lowe.

The group slowly fizzled out due to loss of their pristine flying site (the airport) for site restrictions and the economic pressures of the time.

After a few years, the second chartered group evolved and was known as the “Green River Lake Flying Club”. This group consisted of Dr. Joel Eade, Dr. Steve Hinton, Dr. James Ewing, Allen Johnson, Kenny Childers, Kenny Anderson, Vaughan Sharp, Eddie Graham and Roger Stiles.

In 1988 the flying group got tired of flying off a corn field behind Johnson's garage. The planes were getting bigger and much faster and after couple of bad corn cob strikes to a beautiful airplane, this would get just about anyone down.

The club out grew the field and were looking for something better. With the help of Representative Hal Rodgers, they were able to obtained permission from the Corps of  engineers and the State Park commission and create a paved runway on State Park property.

The strip was graded and paved by a combination of efforts from Campbellsville Mayor Robert Miller, County Judge Executive Fred Waddle and State Park Manager Howard Whitley, for whom the field is named.

Our present group known as the “Green River Lake R/C Club” has been in charter for four years now with David Thomas as our first club president. We still reside at the same Whitley field and our membership is growing.
